I want to enjoy my success, not apologize for it – Miranda Hobbes – Sex & The City

Some people have bark.  Some have bite.  I have both – Olivia Pope – Scandal

I’m big enough to admit.  I’m often inspired by myself.  Leslie Knope – Parks & Rec

You know me.  Never explain.  Never complain.  Violet Crowley – Downtown Abbey

While all of these quotes are from fictional women bosses, I thought we could all relate to some if not all of these quotes or know some “lady” bosses that embody these characteristics.  According to, the number of businesses owned by women in the U.S. has more than doubled in the last twenty years.  Women are starting an average of 849 new businesses per day and there are 11.6 million women-owned businesses in the U.S. generating more than 1.7 trillion dollars in revenue.

Terra & Co.’s CEO Amra Hajdarevic is one of these lady bosses.  She is an American Immigrant and single mother who came up with the formula for Brilliant Black Activated Organic Charcoal Toothpaste when she was pregnant.  Amra takes pride in creating high-quality products without harsh chemicals and her Buy One Give One business model supports low-income and homeless women in the city of Los Angeles.

Here are some other inspiring lady bosses that we look up to:

Sheryl Sandberg – Chief Operating Officer at Facebook, Author & Philanthropist.  Most of us know about Sheryl’s book Lean In and her foundation to inspire other women entrepreneurs LeanIn.Org which she created to “offer women the ongoing inspiration and support to help them achieve their goals."   Her book Lean In encourages women to “lean in” to positions of leadership because she believes that by having more female voices in positions of power there will be more equitable opportunities created for everyone.  I was even more inspired by Sheryl when I saw her on Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday talking about grief.  Sheryl lost her husband in 2015 unexpectedly and co-authored a book about grief titled “Option B”.  Sheryl continues to be an inspiration to not only me, but millions of other women.

Kathryn Minshew – CEO and Creator of The Muse.  The Muse has helped over 50 million people move forward with their careers by providing expert advice and personalized job recommendations.  Minshew has also written a book titled “The New Rules of Work,” the modern playbook for navigating your career.

Jenn Hyman – Founder of Rent The Runway.  What an incredible concept. I don’t know about you, but I certainly don’t have thousands of dollars to wear designer clothes.  Well Jenn thought, if you can’t afford to buy them, why not rent them and so she created Rent The Runway (RTR).  RTR has three different options you can choose from, RTR Reserve – this allows you to rent one outfit.  RTR Update where you can rent wardrobe pieces for the month and then RTR Unlimited where you can keep changing out your wardrobe with no limitations.  I wish I would have thought of this!

Lisa Wang – SheWorx.  The number of women entrepreneurs are growing every day, but there are many barriers that keep them from launching a high-growth startup so Lisa Wang created SheWorx.  SheWorx is a global platform and event series empowering 20,000+ female entrepreneurs to build and scale successful companies.  SheWorx differentiates itself as a leader in driving the movement for gender parity in entrepreneurship.

Bianca Balconis – Founder of Honey Artists.  Honey Artists is an agency for Photographers, Makeup Artists, Manicurists, Stylists, and Hairstylists. Our very own Creative Director, Azra, is represented by Honey Artists.  Bianca runs Honey Artists along with her right hand, Courtney Richter. Azra had this to say about Bianca & Courtney, “Bianca and Courtney are more than just people I work with.  They inspire me.  They are women I can laugh with and cry with too. Bianca is kind but very driven and is good at what she does, she meets every challenge with a smile.  Bianca is a happy person and wants to share that happiness with others.”

These are just of few “lady bosses” that inspire us at Terra & Co.  We’d love to hear from you about your lady boss inspirations!
