Summer solstice and travels are upon us, so we thought we would share a list of our favorite natural and eco-friendly beach must-haves!
First and foremost, is a great sunscreen. With so many to choose from, many with “toxic” ingredients, I always get asked which one to use? My recommendation is any sunscreen from Coola. Not only is Coola a company with similar values and ethics as Terra & Co, but they are also California based. Coola embodies organic wellness, are eco-conscious, understand outdoor & active lifestyles and they support local communities. Coola’s website states “we choose the most innovative, scientifically advanced ingredients that are also as natural, organic, sustainable, and locally sourced as can be. Our eco-conscious formulas are sourced with a Farm to Face® philosophy, ensuring that we always use the freshest, most potent natural and organic ingredients. We incorporate antioxidant-rich Plant Protection® into our sunscreens, which is a selection of plant-based ingredients including Algae and Red Raspberry Seed Oil that help naturally boost our formulas’ efficacy. This allows us to use fewer traditional—and potentially irritating—sunscreen actives. We also weed out all the stuff you don’t want on your skin or in the environment, like parabens, GMOs, and oxybenzone.” That’s a big statement, and I personally know they are as good as they say they are! My personal favorite is their travel size SPF 30 organic sunscreen spray in the Pina Colada sent. It is only $20 and the Pina Colada scent transports me to the tropics!
Before putting on my sunscreen to head out, I love a light-weight tinted moisturizer. Ilia’s Sheer Vivid Tinted Moisturizer SPF20 is my choice. There are 6 shades. I am between shades, so I mix Belle Mare T2 & Hanalei T3 to get my perfect shade and at $42 per tube, it isn’t so painful. Zinc Oxide is what is used for the SPF in this tinted moisturizer and Ilia takes an ethical-sustainable approach with their makeup. They use certified organic bio-active botanicals that nourish and rejuvenate the skin. I also keep their cucumber water stick in my bag. It is a great and refreshing way to get a boost of hydration that my skin is always in need of. It is water-based with cucumber pulp for de-puffing, aloe extract to hydrate and chicory root for anti-inflammatory properties that help stimulate collagen production. This stick is to die for!
Now, I know I’m protected with a fantastic spf and tinted moisturizer, but I still take a great hat! I don’t know about you, but I have had a sunburned scalp before and it isn’t pleasant. Since I haven’t figured out a good way to put sunscreen on the scalp without making my hair greasy, a hat is the way to go. A great option is a Janessa Leone straw hat. Janessa Leone is not only based in LA, but her hats are also handmade in the U.S. using toquilla straw grown in Ecuador. These hats are weather-resistant, offer natural UV protection and are entirely biodegradable! These hats are a small investment, but with care, they will last a lifetime! Check them out at https://janessaleone.com/collections/straw . There are so many great styles to choose from!
Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t remind you to take your Terra & Co. biodegradable bamboo toothbrush and activated charcoal toothpaste! After that delicious BBQ food, who doesn’t like fresh breath and clean teeth!
You are all set for your summer day at the beach!
