What is Environmental Sustainability?

Sustainable dental care

Sustainability…one word that is used quite often now compared to just a few years ago.  Many probably know the meaning, but just in case you are unfamiliar, the dictionary defines sustainability as “avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance.”  Many companies strive to be “eco-friendly” by going with sustainable building materials and also by using sustainable products.  Terra & Co. is no different and offers a sustainable bamboo charcoal bristle toothbrush with their Brilliant Black Activated Charcoal Toothpaste set.  When Terra & Co. first started their sustainable dental care company, they offered a traditional commercially-produced plastic toothbrush with their set.  But when they heard some staggering statistics on plastic toothbrushes, they knew they had to make a change.

The popular brand of Colgate recommends replacing your toothbrush every 3 months.  That is approximately four toothbrushes a year and most go directly into a landfill.  According to the Plastic Pollution Coalition, a single conventional plastic toothbrush weighs about 18 grams (.63 oz).  Using about 300 toothbrushes in our lifetime, each person throws away about 12 pounds of plastic toothbrushes.  With 6.8 billion people on the planet, that makes for approximately 80 billion pounds of plastic toothbrush waste generated during our lifetime.  Where do you think that waste goes…just into landfills? Unfortunately, much of this plastic ends up in our waters.  It has been estimated that 50-80% of our oceans are polluted with plastic, which is extremely harmful to the animals.

When Terra & Co heard this, Amra & Azra knew they needed to do something about this. They decided to search for a sustainable toothbrush to offer with their Brilliant Black Toothpaste Set.  Bamboo is a highly sustainable material that reaches maturity in 3-5 years and does not require pesticides. As for the recyclability of Terra & Co.’s bamboo toothbrush, the bristles are made with non-BPA nylon and is fully compostable. It only takes about 1 year to fully disintegrate as opposed to plastic toothbrushes.

Terra & Co. is happy to join other sustainable luxury brands who want to create everyday used products that are chemical-free so they biodegrade in the environment. There is a great need for the introduction of new values in our society. It is never too late for each individual to be part of the solution, where bigger is not necessarily better, where slower can be faster and where less can be more.
